Andrew initially worked in particle physics from 1986 to 2000. During this time he studied exclusive central production in pp collisions searching for non-qqbar mesons. He did his Ph.D. at the University of Birmingham before moving to CERN where he was the spokesperson for the WA91 and WA102 experiments performed at the Omega spectrometer.
In 2000 Andrew changed fields to work on fusion energy for UKAEA at the Culham Science centre. He became the head of the UKs magnetic confinement fusion science programme and was responsible for the operation of the MAST Upgrade tokamak. At the end of 2021, Andrew retired from UKAEA and is now very pleased that he has been able to return to the University of Birmingham particle physics group. He has resumed work on exclusive central production, this time with the AFP apparatus at the ATLAS experiment.
