Summary

Andy’s research activities focus on the ATLAS experiment, based at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Andy leads the Birmingham effort on quality assurance for the silicon strip sensor production associated with the upgrade of the ATLAS tracking detector (ITk) for the high luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). More generally, Andy is interested in studying the radiation hardness of semiconductor sensors for future collider experiments, using the irradiation facility based at the Birmingham MC40 cyclotron.

In terms of physics interests, the focus of his research with ATLAS involves the study of the interaction of the Higgs boson with quarks (particularly the charm and light quarks) and the physics of heavy quarks, within the context of hadronic jet flavour tagging and the production of quarkonium states.

Andy has held a number of positions of responsibility within the ATLAS experiment, including coordination of activities involving the study of Higgs boson decays to heavy quarks, flavour tagging calibration, inner detector material and quarkonium physics.
