Abstract
The heavy flavour content of the proton is studied
in electron-proton collisions at the HERA collider,
which operated until 2007. The measurements of charm and
beauty production are sensitive to the gluon density of the
proton and provide a stringent test of perturbative
quantum chromodynamics. A precise knowledge of proton
structure is important for understanding standard model and
new physics processes at the LHC.
