The Search for Exotics with CMS at LHC

James Brooke (Bristol University)

Abstract

The Standard Model of particle physics has been confirmed to incredible precision in numerous tests, most recently with the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC. However, it has many shortcomings, including the hierarchy problem, and failures to explain baryon asymmetry, dark matter, dark energy, and gravity. There must be physics beyond the Standard Model. I will review searches for new physics with the CMS detector, using the LHC Run 1 data, with a focus on exotic physics including dark matter and long lived particles.
