Volcanoes and other things that go boom... applications of muon tomography

Jaap Velthuis (Bristol University)

Abstract

Muon tomography is a novel imaging technology that allows imaging of the insides of closed objects from a safe distance without introducing radiation. This makes it an excellent technique to probe the internal structure of volcanoes, to detect nuclear bombs smuggled in cargo containers and monitor legacy nuclear waste. In this presentation I will discuss the detectors and analysis techniques and present results on the aforementioned topics.
