Title: Diffractive Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA

Abstract
In the deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) process ep -> eX, a quark inside the proton is struck violently by an exchanged boson. It is therefore surprising that about 10% of such events are of the form ep -> eX'p, the proton surviving the interaction intact and losing only a small fraction of its momentum. This `diffractive DIS' process has been studied in detail at the HERA collider over the past decade and has led to new insights into the strong nuclear force at high energy. This seminar will give a general introduction to and review of diffractive DIS, focusing on recently finlised data from the H1 experiment, their interpretation and their implications for future experiments.
